The origin and formation of this square arose over time as more and more houses were built in the area around the cemetery, which surrounded the Romanesque temple of Sant Miquel. It was in front of this temple that the market took place. Between the 12th and 13th centuries, the abbot and canon from the Sant Vicenç Church began to allot and establish rights to the land around the Sant Miquel cemetery in accordance with emphyteusis. They were encouraged to do this with the arrival of young cabalers (youngest sons) who came from rural backgrounds to Cardona in search of fortune provided by fate, merchants and tradesmen who wanted to set themselves up in the town and its market. As time went on, toward the end of the Middle Ages, this public space was named la Plaça del Mercat, the Market Square.
